Why a Mutual Fund Distributor Needs Their Own Website
Referrals now get searched before they get called. Here is what an AMFI-registered distributor's website needs, and what you can safely skip.

Someone asks a colleague who handles their SIPs. They get a name and a phone number. Before they call, they do what everyone does now: they search the name.
If nothing comes up, the referral quietly dies there. Not because you did anything wrong. Because handing your savings to someone with no visible trace feels careless.
That is the problem a website solves for a distributor. It is not advertising. It is the thing that lets a warm referral turn into a phone call.
The short answer
If you are AMFI-registered and you get business by referral, you need a website. It does not need to be big. It needs to load fast, say clearly who you are, and let someone start a conversation without having to ring a stranger.
What people check before trusting you with money
Watch someone land on a distributor's site and you can almost see the checklist running:
- Who you are. A real name, a real photo, how long you have been doing this, your ARN.
- What you handle. Mutual funds only, or insurance, retirement planning, child education and fixed income too.
- How you get paid. Commission, fee, or both. People are more comfortable when you say it plainly than when they have to guess.
- Whether anyone else uses you. Years in the business, families served, a few words from real clients.
- How to reach you. A number that works, and ideally a way to ask a question without committing to a call.
None of that is difficult to put on a page. Most distributors simply never have.
Goal pages beat product pages
Nobody wakes up wanting a mutual fund. They wake up worried about their daughter's college fees in eleven years, or whether they can stop working at fifty-eight.
So the pages that get read are not "Equity Funds" and "Debt Funds". They are retirement, child education, wealth creation, protecting the family. Same products underneath. Framed as the thing the person is actually anxious about.
Calculators do the selling you would rather not do
A SIP or retirement calculator is the single most-used thing on a distributor's site, and it does something a brochure cannot: it makes the number personal before you ever speak.
Someone works out that ₹8,000 a month for eighteen years becomes a figure they did not expect. Now they have a reason to call you, and they arrive already half-convinced. I have written separately about why calculators earn their place.
Where compliance actually bites
I am not your compliance officer, and you should check anything specific with someone who is. But the practical version:
- Standard risk wording on anything mentioning returns.
- No guarantees, no past performance dressed up as a promise.
- Your ARN visible.
- A disclaimer page and a privacy policy, because you are collecting phone numbers.
Build these in from the start. Retrofitting them after a notice is far more expensive than including them on day one.
What you do not need
- An app. Your clients will not install one to check a portfolio twice a year.
- A login area. The fund houses and the RTA already provide statements. Rebuilding that is a large cost for something people barely use.
- A blog you will never write. Two good pages beat twenty abandoned ones.
If you take on fewer than a handful of new families a year and every one arrives through your father-in-law's circle, a single well-made page and a clean Google Business Profile may genuinely be enough. I would rather tell you that now than sell you eight pages you do not need.
What it costs
A distributor site with goal-based service pages, a working calculator suite and the legal pages is a mid-sized website project, not an enterprise build. The estimator will give you a range in about a minute, and websites and CMS work explains what is included.
If you are registered, taking referrals, and there is nothing to find when someone searches your name, send me a WhatsApp with your ARN and what you actually handle. I will tell you the smallest thing that would fix it, even when that is less than I would like to build.
