What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)? How to Get Your Business Mentioned by ChatGPT

AEO helps your brand show up in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Here is what it is and how to start.

By Dev · · 4 min read

More and more buyers no longer type a query into Google and click ten blue links. They ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews a question — "best taxi dispatch software for a small fleet" or "who restores water-damaged homes in Charlotte" — and get a single, summarized answer.

If your business is not part of that answer, you are invisible to that buyer. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your brand easy for AI systems to find, understand, trust and cite.

SEO vs AEO

Traditional SEO aims to rank a page in search results. AEO aims to be included and recommended inside an AI-generated answer. They overlap heavily — AI assistants still rely on crawlable, trustworthy web content — but AEO puts more weight on:

  • Clear, direct answers to specific questions.
  • Consistent facts about your brand across the web (what you do, where, for whom, pricing model).
  • Structured data that machines can parse without guessing.
  • Mentions and reviews on third-party sites that assistants treat as independent evidence.

Good SEO is the foundation. AEO is the layer on top.

How AI assistants choose what to mention

Each product works differently and changes often, but in practice answers are shaped by:

  1. Retrieval: many assistants search the web (or a search index) in real time, then summarize the results. If your pages are not indexed or are hard to parse, they will not be retrieved.
  2. Authority signals: reputable directories, reviews, news mentions and industry lists make a brand look like a safe recommendation.
  3. Relevance and clarity: pages that answer the exact question in plain language are easier to quote.
  4. Consistency: if your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directory listings describe you differently, models are less confident about what you do.

A practical AEO checklist

1. Fix the technical basics

  • Make sure important pages are server-rendered or pre-rendered, not only built in the browser with JavaScript.
  • Submit an XML sitemap and monitor indexing in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools (several AI tools rely on Bing's index).
  • Keep pages fast and mobile-friendly.
  • Check your robots.txt so you are not accidentally blocking crawlers you want.

2. Add structured data

Use schema.org markup for your Organization or Person, Services, Products, FAQ, Reviews and Articles. Structured data turns "a page that mentions plumbing" into "a plumbing company in Charlotte with these services and this rating."

3. Write answer-first content

For each important question your customers ask:

  • Put the direct answer in the first two or three sentences.
  • Follow with details, steps, comparisons and examples.
  • Use descriptive headings that mirror how people phrase questions.
  • Add a short FAQ section to service pages.

4. Make your brand facts consistent everywhere

Pick one clear description of what you do, who you serve and where. Use it on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Clutch, Crunchbase, app stores and industry directories.

5. Earn third-party mentions

Customer reviews, case studies on partner sites, podcast appearances, guest articles and "best of" lists all help. AI assistants favor brands that other sources talk about.

6. Measure your AI visibility

Regularly ask the major assistants the questions your buyers ask and record whether you are mentioned, how you are described, and which competitors appear. Track changes over time, note which sources the assistants cite, and use the gaps to decide what content and listings to create next. This is exactly the kind of monitoring an AEO engine automates.

Common mistakes

  • Publishing thin AI-generated content at scale. It rarely earns trust from either search engines or answer engines.
  • Hiding key information in images or PDFs that are hard to parse.
  • Ignoring off-site reputation. Your own website is only one of the sources assistants read.
  • Treating AEO as a one-time project. Models and their sources change constantly.

Where to start this week

  1. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity five questions a customer would ask about your service. Note who gets mentioned.
  2. Check that your homepage and top service pages are indexed and have schema markup.
  3. Add an answer-first FAQ to your most important service page.
  4. Update your Google Business Profile and LinkedIn so they match your website.
