React Native vs Flutter in 2026: Which Should Your Startup Choose?
A practical comparison of React Native and Flutter from a developer who has shipped both and migrated a fintech app between them.

If you are planning a mobile app, one of the first technical decisions is the framework. In 2026 the two serious cross-platform options are still React Native and Flutter. Both let you ship iOS and Android from one codebase, both are used by large companies, and both can produce apps users cannot tell apart from "fully native" ones.
I have built production apps with both — marketplaces, streaming apps, delivery apps and several fintech wallets — and I have migrated a live digital wallet from React Native to Flutter. Here is how I actually decide.
The short answer
- Choose React Native if you already have a React or JavaScript web team, want to share logic between web and mobile, or depend heavily on JavaScript libraries and SDKs.
- Choose Flutter if your app is UI-heavy and custom-designed, you want very consistent performance on low-end Android devices, or you are starting fresh without a JavaScript codebase.
Neither choice is "wrong." The expensive mistake is choosing without looking at your team, your product and your roadmap.
How they work (in one minute)
React Native lets you write your app in JavaScript or TypeScript with React. Your components map to real native UI elements. The modern architecture (Fabric and TurboModules) removed much of the old "bridge" overhead, so performance is far better than a few years ago.
Flutter uses the Dart language and draws every pixel itself with its own rendering engine. That is why Flutter apps look identical on every device — and why custom animations and designs are straightforward.
Performance
For most business apps — lists, forms, dashboards, payments, chat — both are more than fast enough. Differences show up at the edges:
- Complex animations and custom UI: Flutter has an edge because it controls rendering end to end.
- Low-end Android phones: Flutter tends to be more predictable. This mattered for a wallet app I worked on whose users were mostly on budget devices in emerging markets, and it was one reason we migrated to Flutter.
- Heavy native SDK usage: React Native can be simpler when a vendor already ships a well-maintained React Native SDK.
Developer availability and cost
React Native benefits from the huge JavaScript ecosystem: many web developers can become productive quickly, and you can share validation, API clients and business logic with a React or Next.js website.
Flutter developers are now easy to find too, and Dart is simple to learn. If you do not already have a JavaScript team, availability is no longer a deciding factor.
Design and UI
If your designer hands over a highly custom, brand-driven interface, Flutter makes it easy to match the Figma file exactly. React Native gives you native-feeling controls out of the box, which some products prefer — for example, apps that should "feel like iOS" on iPhone and "feel like Android" on Android.
Updates after launch
Both support over-the-air (OTA) updates for fixing bugs without waiting for store review. React Native has Expo Updates and CodePush alternatives; Flutter has Shorebird, which I have set up in production for a fintech app. For regulated products, make sure OTA fits your compliance and app-store rules.
Long-term maintenance
This is where many projects get hurt. Framework upgrades, deprecated libraries and OS changes add ongoing work regardless of the framework. Practical tips:
- Keep third-party dependencies to the ones you truly need.
- Upgrade regularly instead of jumping several major versions at once.
- Add crash and performance monitoring (for example Datadog or Sentry) from day one.
When a migration makes sense
Migrating a live app is a big decision. It made sense for the wallet I mentioned because performance on target devices, UI consistency and long-term maintainability all pointed the same way. If only one of those is a problem, fixing it inside your current framework is usually cheaper.
My recommendation
- MVP with a web app too, and a JavaScript team: React Native.
- Design-led consumer app, or users on low-end Android: Flutter.
- Existing app with issues: audit first — an upgrade often beats a rewrite.
